SUICIDE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS

In the era of technological advancement and nuclear family approach influenced from western world has significantly impacted the mental health of the individuals negatively. The chase for money, rising social standards and living conditions has made people self-centred. The dearth of healthy and fulfilling social connections, the inability to share happiness and sorrows and the individualistic attitudes caused isolation and loneliness within the society.

As per a research study, 164 thousand deaths were reported due to suicide in India in the year 2021. Reports also claim that family issues are the leading cause of suicide in South Asian Countries. The state of Maharashtra reported highest number of suicides, followed by Tamil Nadu. It has been also seen that males commit suicide more than the female counterparts. The chief reason behind this unequal ratio is the belief system that men can’t be vulnerable. Those men who cry or express emotions are considered weak. It’s vital to remember that everyone has the equal right to emotions of grief, sorrow, guilt and anger. Emotions are not a patent of any one gender.

Since, suicide rates are escalating on a daily basis, it’s crucial for every one of us to be more aware of any changes in others behaviours or moods, to listen the problems of people patiently and handle it sensitively.

Some of the warning sings a person with suicidal ideation might show are as follows:

· Feelings of hopelessness and emptiness

· Feeling extremely sad, agitated and anxious most of the time

· Crying spells

· Feeling alone

· Feeling like they are a burden

· Using drugs or alcohol excessively

· Searching for weapons or tools for suicide

· Withdrawing from friends and family

Noticing these warning signs is the first step towards saving an innocent life. It’s a myth that people who feel suicidal wants to end their life rather they actually wants to come out of the painful situation/feeling.

So what we can do to help people around us who feel suicidal?

· Talk to them: Make them feel safe and comfortable in sharing their inner emotions and problems. Lend your ear and listen to them without being judgemental.

· Ask them directly if they are having suicidal thoughts: Asking them in a polite and genuine way about their plans and thoughts about suicide will be beneficial to analyse if an immediate action is required.

· Do not judge them if they mention about suicide: Invalidating their feelings and passing a judgement might resist them in sharing further.

· Remove weapons from their environment: Any sharp object or a rope which could cause harm to the person should be removed from their environment and suicide prevention helplines should be contacted.

· Instil hope: Inspire them, show your love and support towards them, and make them believe that they are worthy of everything they deserve. Showing a ray of hope will be beneficial.

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention month. So, let's create a positive and welcoming environment; let's be sensitive towards each other; let's talk about our inner fears, dilemmas and insecurities in a safe and non-judgemental environment and let's de-stigmatize talking about suicide. Generally people feel better when they get the support of family and friends.

In case you notice that the problem is grave, seek a therapist or a counsellor’s help.
